Mes Chamoru

Each March on Guam and around the world, Chamorus celebrate Mes Chamoru or Chamoru month. It is a time to highlight and celebrate Chamoru language and culture. Most people say Mes Chamoru to refer to this time, but here is Makåhna with our annual reminder of an alternative.

But if you don’t want to use a Spanish derived word, the older word for month is “pulan” or moon. “Pulan” also means to watch over something, so by saying “Pulan Chamoru” you are saying to take care of or protect things that are Chamoru.

Let this month be about protecting and promoting what makes the Chamoru people who they are. And it doesn’t have to just stay when one moon’s cycle or one month. It should be every day. But one month is a good way to get started. Biba, Chamoru!
